The production of handmade carpets in W estern Anatolia and the Aegean region
has a rich tradition and history .These carpets have been exported since the
16th century, and are generally known by the names of Kula or Izmir .They were
used in churches and palaces. Sometimes one sees examples in the paintings of
famous artists. Many of the classical, old hotels of the west were decorated
with carpets from the Aegean region. The majority of the examples which have
survived are considered to be rare pieces and are kept in museums.
Today , many carpet weaving centreS outside the Aegean region produce pure wool carpets exhibiting the traditional Kula patterns. These carpets are the best examples of the Turkish art of carpet weaving and make one of the best souvenirs, since they can be handed down from generation to generation. They are manufactured in all sizes and colours.
